What is the “Movement is Medicine” hashtag all about?

If you’ve seen our posts on Instagram, you may have noticed the “#movementismedicine” hashtag.

Movement is medicine is one of the founding principles of the First Responders Are Human initiative; it is the idea that movement of any kind be it hiking, biking, running, skiing, yoga or hitting the gym, just getting off the couch some days, you name it, can be used to help heal mental injury. For those with and without a diagnosed mental injury, movement and exercise can wonderfully benefit physical and mental health, not to mention the soul.

FRAH started in 2016 with a 1,600 kilometer (1,000 mile) bike ride and mental health campaign, and since then, we have been continuously encouraging people to get moving.

Despite our origin story, members and supporters don’t need to undertake extreme challenges to be a part of our community because any sort of movement does the trick. Our guiding ethos is that anyone can join to find a clique-less community of first responders seeking healing or maintenance through sport, exercise, adventure, and camaraderie.

What’s so important about movement?

- It helps us feel better,

- Function better,

- Sleep better,

- Concentrate better, and

- Reduces stress.

So do something active, post about it, and use the #MovementisMedicine hashtag. Our community needs you to help us grow!
